new level 4 agents coming to new eden

reported by CCP Fallout | 2009.05.30 01:12:07 | NEW

Out with the old, in with the new. Whether it's the discovery of new areas of space or new graphics and effects, EVE Online continuously evolves. Joining the evolution: content. In addition to renovating some old missions and new dead space areas, a slew of new Level 4 agents have made their home in New Eden far away from some of the more busier mission hubs. CCP Molock gives us the lowdown on what the Content team has been up to of late in his latest dev blog.

You can discuss this blog here.

ccp hellmar, kind of a big deal

reported by CCP Manifest | 2009.05.28 20:21:38 | NEW

We're not much for hero worship here at CCP. Each link in the chain is equally important as the two it is attached to. The metaphors available for our stoic, unified effort are both inexhaustible and true. But every so often we take note of particular acknowledgements.

CCP Hellmar, our CEO, is almost as big a deal as internet spaceships themselves. Once again he was recognized by Beckett Massive Online Gamer as one of the top 20 most influential people in the MMO industry, moving up this year to number 2. You can read the rest of the list here.

john rourke to receive award from pioneer alliance

reported by ISD Najax Lergazin | 2009.05.22 00:59:27 | NEW
A Proteus Class Cruiser will be awarded to John Rourke by members of Pioneer Alliance in recognition and thanks for his work on his latest blockbuster holoreel 'Clear Skies 2'.

The Cruiser Rourke Will ReceiveThe holoreel, which has hit the screens earlier this month, is currently being broadcast throughout New Eden receiving numerous accolades and sparking the imagination of many capsuleers.

TechPalatinus, Pioneer Alliance's CEO, stated "The creator of 'Clear Skies 2' has done a lot for [New Eden's community]... We felt it was within our means to reward him for his efforts."

Strategic Cruisers are still rare ships in New Eden. These ships require specialized training and can be prohibitively expensive; a fully fitted Proteus can cost up to 3 Billion ISK.

John Rourke's reaction to the award was of genuine surprise: "I'm honoured by them and [by New Eden's] community, this is a fantastic gift. It's a real sign of how much people liked the two films, so very rewarding." He has already determined how he is going to use his new ship: "I'm going to look at its shinyness lovingly, fit it out with expensive gear, and then swan around highsec."

The ship turnover will be held in John's home system of Oimmo, at Planet V, Moon 1, Caldari Navy Station. The event will commence at 19:00 on Sunday with an "honour lap" of the surrounding systems. John is expected to fly the original Clear Skies Tempest battleship, while Pioneer Alliance will fly alongside in Tech 3 ships.

It is unlikely that John will be able to fly his shiny new ship out of the dock on the first day, as he will need some time to train the necessary skills.

The Interstellar Correspondents intends to be present at the ceremony and will keep you updated on any changes to the event.

five motherships downed in branch

reported by ISD Calen Orvance | 2009.05.12 15:30:26
source: http://www.eveonline.com/news.asp?a=single&nid=3053&tid=7

EQI2-2, BRANCH - The X-Trading Company [XT], a [-RZR-] corporation, suffered the loss of five motherships, a carrier, and various support ships during an engagement with Triumvirate [TRI] and White Noise [WN] Monday evening. The battle took place around 1800 just outside the [-RZR-] station "EQI2 Failure Cascadery".

Grim Master of [-RZR-] reportedly undocked an Archon class carrier in a possible attempt to bait a twenty-seven man [WN] support gang led by first time Fleet Commander BCE HAX. [WN] diplomat and fleet member Pazelya reports that BCE HAX was "aware that it might be bait" and initially sent only interceptors in to make the tackle.

The tackle was made outside of the station's docking range forcing Grim Master to begin triage. The first Nyx mothership then warped in from a nearby POS. At this time [TRI] was notified and began to jump a distant battleship fleet towards the engagement.

A [-RZR-] Erebus class titan also appeared early on but managed to destroy only four [WN] ships.

Shortly after the the titan's brief appearance, the engagement nearly broke off when [WN]'s sole interdictor succumbed to the [XT] capitals after a second Nyx arrived on scene. However, [WN] chose to stay and prevent the capitals from warping by continuously colliding with one of their ships.

"...due to them being amazingly heroic and just awesome tacklers, they decided to kinda suicide bump them 'till [WN] and [TRI] 'dictors got into system," reported [TRI] FC Kebabski.

This action held the [XT] group in place as the remaining two capitals appeared to have chosen to stay rather then leave their fellow pilot behind. The colliding continued for nearly ten minutes according to pilots who were on scene. Eventually, interdictors from both [TRI] and [WN] arrived and secured tackles with bubbles.

At long last, battleships began to trickle onto the field for [TRI] and [WN] while a [TRI] capital fleet learned that EQ12-2 was not cynojammed and jumped to a mid-point cyno as the battle in EQI2-2 progressed.

At this point, a third mothership reportedly joined the engagement as Grim Master's Archon disintegrated. The last two motherships arrived just as Thunderdarks Nyx fell to sustained battleship fire according to sources.

Moments later, Kebabski reports a cyno was placed in system and the [TRI] dreadnoughts proceeded to engage the remaining four motherships who "started melting" he states.

Following the battle, excited diplomats Pazela and OhYeah! offered the following statement on behalf of the newly announced W.T.F. coalition ([WN]+[TRI]+Friends):

"We are sincerely asking Morsus Mihi to come back north finally and 'evict' us... Morsus Mihi should come ASAP and help their best friends fight us here. W.T.F. is waiting."

The five lost motherships were flown by Xeraxes Craven, RedCodeX, iMic ger, Cal Drago, and Thunderdarks.

None of these pilots had responded to interview requests as of press time. However, [-RZR-] has confirmed the losses on several GalNet sources.

Vision and Growth - An Award for EVE

source: http://evevault.ign.com

CCP has just been awarded the Media Momentum Award from the European Digital Media Industry.

It recognizes the company's "Vision and Future Growth Potential."

Considering EVE Online has grown to over 300,000 active subscribers and seems to keep rising, it doesn't come as a big surprise that someone would recognize their accomplishments.

The full press release gives all the details.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CCP Recognized for Vision and Growth Potential by European Digital Media Industry

Developer of EVE Online makes Media Momentum's Larger Companies List for 2009

Reykjavik, ICELAND - May 20, 2009 - CCP, one of the world's leading independent game developers and creator of the critically acclaimed massively multiplayer online game (MMO) EVE Online, has been recognized for its remarkable year-over-year growth by being ranked on the Media Momentum's Larger Companies List 2009 and receiving a Media Momentum Award ( http://www.mediamomentum.co.uk/ ). The Media Momentum Awards honor the hottest and fastest growing digital media companies in Europe as judged by European digital media industry luminaries.

The industry recognition follows EVE Online's subscriber base topping 300,000 as the game celebrated its sixth anniversary on May 6, 2009. To support continued in-game growth and creative development of EVE Online, CCP is also increasing its headcount, recruiting top industry talent for about 60 positions over the course of 2009.

CCP's CEO, Hilmar Petursson, accepted the company's Media Momentum Award for "Vision and Future Growth Potential" and attended at an invitation-only awards dinner on May 13, 2009 in London. Said Petursson: "CCP is honored to receive this award as it validates our earliest plans of the future for EVE Online, a true virtual society that has a real sense of history and intrigue between players. We feel fortunate to have experienced dynamic growth both in our products and as a company and hope to use that energy to propel them further."

EVE Online The best Sci-Fi MMO keeps getting better

Source: www.gamefocus.ca
By Brian Edey (Falelorn)
Posted on May the 19th 2009 at 05:40:48 AM
CCP, the developers of EVE Online, have released their 11th content update or expansion called Apocrypha and if you only read the first sentence of the review to put it bluntly it makes this amazing game even better. This new expansion adds much to the overall game and should bring new gamers to the huge universe and even have some return to see what has been added. What exactly has been added includes new wormholes which can send you to unknown areas of space, new ships such as the T3 Strategic Cruisers, and new tutorials for the gamer new to EVE, new skill queue and more. It is an impress feat to add so much to an already massive universe.

The story of EVE Online is about as un-cliché and unique as you can expect in a video game now days and I take my hat off to the developers for not taking the easy route and making things plain, simple and boring. Basically the main races of the game all comes from what was once Earth and human kind had begun to explore the universe, but an apocalyptic event thousands of years ago cut off these civilizations from Earth and each other and now with advances in technology allowing them to interact things have begun to get interesting. There is a fragile peace in place but how long it lasts is anyone’s guess.

18/05/2009 New Chronicle: Houses of the Holy

It is almost inevitable: the mightier, full of hubris, fall to the lesser. When the greed of stealing a planet from a backward Amarrian sect blinds a band of would-be conquerors, will they choose martyrdom or long life when faced with the holiest of unholies?

"Houses of the Holy" is a new EVE Chronicle written by CCP Abraxas. Published every other Monday, Chronicles are intended to examine the various aspects of life in New Eden. The entire list is contained here, and a comment thread for this particular story may be found here.

EvE online now has more subscribers than Warhammer?

Friday, 08 May 2009 22:56 Phaine
It's no secret that Warhammer Online isnt doing as well as expected, however today I got a rather interesting surprise.

I have known for years that CCP and EvE online were growing. In fact, as far as I know its the only MMO pre 2004 that is still growing. But little did I know how much.

Ea recently had its investor conference call, where they spill the beans on how they are doing. This source states that WAR now has 300,000 subscribers. Now, I dont want to slam on Mythic, cause I loved DAOC, but most folks would agree WAR is most likely losing subs not gaining them.

However, CCP just announced that it has not only met, but surpassed 300,000 subscribers. You can find the press release here. What blows me away, is at the first of the year, they were at about 250,000 subscribers. They are now over 300k, thats a 20% increase.

Pretty amazing stuff, keep up the good work CCP.

New Chronicle: And Sometimes the Fear

reported by CCP Fallout | 2009.05.06 19:13:10 | NEW

Some say that life is nothing more but a series of twisty little passages we pass through thoughtlessly, ceaselessly mired in the moments that make up our pathetic existences. For Lauder, his maze is the beginning of the end as he spelunks a mysterious asteroid that may hold the key to his problems, or may be a descent into an ancient netherworld, or then again may simply be a journey through his own crumbling mind.

"And Sometimes the Fear" is a new EVE Chronicle written by CCP Abraxas. Published every other Monday, Chronicles are intended to examine the various aspects of life in New Eden. The entire list is contained here. Note that while it is not necessary to have read any other story beforehand, this piece may lend the chron a little more depth.

You may discuss the new Chronicle here.

EVE's 6th Birthday with 300,000 of your closest friends (and enemies)

reported by CCP Manifest | 2009.05.06 16:55:31 | NEW

EVE Online celebrates its 6th year of existence today--May 6th.

A 6 year persistant history. A living history where truly brilliant strategies have unfolded. Truly terrible betrayals unveiled. We are excited to see what will happen next.

This year has been very successful for EVE Online, thanks in large part to the Apocrypha expansion and a return to retail. We started out the year with around 244,000 subscribers and in five short months we've had a 22% growth in subscribers. In the past couple days we surpassed the impressive milestone of 300,000 active subscribers.

We've broken our peak concurrent user record 3 times this year alone, standing now at an impressive 53,850 in the same universe. That is exponential growth. We couldn't think of a better birthday present than having more people playing EVE Online than ever before. It is another sweet reminder of EVE's boundless potential.

As always, we encourage you to bring your friends, family and even enemies to New Eden. Cheers to that.

It's been a crazy few months for the team and we've seen people grow from mere juniors into invaluable team members, as well as getting a helping hand from seasoned veterans like Art Director Kári Gunnarsson and Lead Illustrator Börkur Eiríksson. We've overcome many obstacles, fighting the technical restrictions, while also demanding quality and variety from the designs and their execution. Boundaries were pushed, polygons and pixels abused to the max. With time and resources having been at a premium, we truly had pushed it to the limit.

For those interested in the process, the video below depicts it to some degree, from sketches to blockout models to what we call paintovers to finished assets. Making the thousands of man hours put into these seem like mere minutes.

For those wanting to know more about the stats and game design behind the fourth variation, there's a great discussion thread on the subject on the EVE-O forums.

The process had also been an evolving one. We had set out to make the asset production as efficient as possible but we also made sure that we were never sacrificing quality or vision to do so. Great care had been taken to insure all the varying pieces fit together. That's no small task, seeing as we had 243 different ship combinations per race (972 total) with the with the 3 variations available when Apocrypha launched. The 4th variation made available as of Apocrypha 1.1 (April 16th) brings that total up to 4096 different ship combinations. That being said, we can't exclude the possibility that some might find some interesting combinations not specifically to their liking, be it stat wise or visually.

By this time in our minds here in the Art department, we were certain that now close to 6 weeks after release the market would be flooded with Tech3 ships and people would be bored with the 3 variations already in and would be anxiously awaiting the 4th. But it seems the required ventures into Wormhole space, with the accompanying Sleeper encounters as well as the manufacturing involved, has proven to be quite the challenge even for the most seasoned of players.

The experience has been quite the learning process and even though proving painful at times it ultimately yielded the results we were after. Not enough can be said about the efforts and dedication of the art teams involved and it's been an honor to have been part of such a team that took a near impossible task and made it happen.

Effects

The effects system was due for an overhaul and we at CCP took that to heart. All the effects were renovated making eve look even greater than ever before. Having said that, the cliché is also true, there is never enough time to polish and iterate on the work. Add on top of that the fact the effects system itself also received an overhaul this time around. These facts left us with a handful of renovated effects after release, needing exactly that. More time and polish. With resources still being scarce we're working from a priority list. On it were f.e. the Warp effect, POS forcefields and the SalvageScan effect. The stargate jump effect was also polished a bit, but mostly timing wise along with some technical defects being solved. Adding new effects alongside polishing our current ones will be an ongoing and evolving process as our artists get a better handle on the new system and figure out new and creative ways to abuse it. All in the noble goal to make EvE the most beautiful (SciFi) MMO out there.

Networking changes on TQ

from Eve-Online Developer Blog.

Well, we have done tons on upgrading PC machines with more memory faster hard drives, gone from floppy drivers to some RAMSAN thing, but while this was happening the network operations team has been looking at the most important thing (from the NOC standpoint), the network. Without a network connection to this interweb thing, EVE would be a great single player console game for some lonely guys in Telecity datacenter ;P

The Internet, how does it really work (yikes!!)

When I started working with Internet routing, coming from a rigid corporate environment, I was surprised how little control you have over your traffic and how flaky the Internet really is. I have read in books about all the bells and whistles of traffic engineering but I've never seen the real application until I met BGP and the Internet. As many of you know, the Internet started out as few universities talking to each other. BGP (Border Gateway protocol) is the main building block of the Internet. The Internet is built up by BGP speaking peers (routers). Each origin (like CCP) has a network slice and we announce our network to our neighbors and hope they announce them to other neighbors. We rely on our next hop (upstream) neighbors to accept our prefix and carry the traffic.

The major problem with the Internet is that BGP is not very deterministic; it relies heavily on something called an AS-PATH. Each entity on the Internet has an AS number (autonomous system). The path from client to CCP is usually the AS of client ISP, Tier1 SP (top of the Internet), CCP. There will often be other upstream providers of the client ISP. What is the problem here? Within one AS there could be 10 router hops (as seen via traceroute) Those hops could go to Europe, the US and then back to Europe. The best part is that there is a lot of meddling with the best paths. Some ISP's will have a good connection to some Tier1 providers, but may also have a cheaper connection with some lousy provider that they engineer the traffic to.

One example of this problem is Vodafone in Iceland. They peer with a large transit network called Cogent and then with T-systems (Deutche Telecom) in Europe. We don't peer with any of them. The shortest path from CCP to Vodafone Iceland is CCP-Telia-Cogent-Vodafone Iceland. The AS path, then, is two hops. The problem with this is that Cogent chooses to send all traffic to US and then over to Iceland via Vodafone. This is one AS hop. What we must then do is to manually engineer the traffic to use a longer path through our multi-homed connection in Telecity to get to Tiscali, who peer with T-systems, and then we reach Vodafone using the shortest real distance.

So where does CCP stand

Until recently, we had two connections to the Internet: one was with Telia Sonera, a Tier1 service provider (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tier_1_network). The other connection was with a multi-home peering platform operated by Telecity in London. We had limited control over our traffic. One important thing about BGP: you can control where you send the traffic, not how it returns.

So remember when you do a traceroute to TQ, it's very likely the traceroute from TQ could be very different. (I'll discuss that more below).

We decided it was not enough having only two providers even if they are dual connected for redundancy. Internet services providers get overloaded and have all kinds of issues. Having only two limits the options we have circumventing bad spots on the Internet. It was decided to get as close to the user as possible. This meant peering with the Tier1 service providers directly and in some cases try to obtain direct peering with big end user service providers. After doing some searching we found a company called Packet Exchange. They are supplying us with direct peering with some of the major Tier1 providers and direct peering with 120 smaller SP's. This was a very good match for us and we jumped on it.

The hardware conundrum

TQ core network infrastructure is built up by Cisco Catalyst switches and routers. Up to now we have been using a Cisco Catalyst 6500 as our distribution switch when peering with the outside world. When this hardware was chosen, the Internet routing table was around 250k entries and this equipment could handle it with ease. The table is growing day by day and is close to 280k routes now. The router module in the 6500 is not specialized to handle large number of BGP routes, so it became apparent that if we'd want to increase the number of peers we would have to change the network structure.

Initially we looked at few different platforms. It was always clear that we would stick with Cisco as we have good internal knowledge of the platform and they have proven to be very reliable. In the Cisco product line there are few models that we could use, one being the old and proven 7200 series, the newcomer ASR1000 series running IOS XE software and the supersized 7600-S chassis.

As we are CCP, we went for the supersized option and got the 7600-S platform with a RSP720-3CXL route processor. I read on some thread that it was indicated an IOS-based platform would give us challenges. I'm a true believer that IOS-based platform is perfect for us. The setup is not that complex, and now we have a very robust routing platform with a very fast switchover in case of hardware failure. Cisco 12K, CRS-1's are in the big service provider range and are just so expensive and for our scenario offer no real additional value.

Last week:

We installed the 7600's and turned on the links to Packet Exhange. This was done softly so we eased the changes in and hopefully no one noticed anything. There was a small hiccup as one of the fiber patch cables failed horribly but that was quickly dealt with.

We now have direct peering with: Global Crossing, Teleglobe, KPN, Telia, AboveNet and Level3. We still have the multihomed connection in Telecity operational, but that one is going to be closed soon. Level3 is eating up most of the traffic as expected as they are by far the largest Tier1 service provider.

We will soon turn on peering with 120 smaller SP's through a multilateral peering platform that PacketExchange operates.

We are in fact a small Tier2 service provider, with one customer, TQ ;P (though we don't have any downstream providers).

Next steps:

We continue working on improving the network infrastructure to get as close to you as possible. We are now looking at providing a "looking glass" service. This will allow you to take a look how the traffic is going from TQ to you. This is very important tool to find out if the traffic is perhaps taking some long detour as the traces you are currently supplying in the disconnect threads don't telling the whole story. We now have a real option of rerouting traffic and choosing the best path to the customer as with only two providers the options where very limited. Perhaps one day you can choose the outgoing provider through the web portal ;P Now, that would be very cool! But, these are still under investigation on how, if, and when we should do this.

Just few notes about traceroute:

When you do a traceroute, you send a packet to the destination with a low time to live number in the header. A router in the path will subtract one from the TTL and if the TTL Is 0, it drops the packet and sends an ICMP message back saying "time exceeded." Traceroute starts sending a packet with TTL of 1 and increments each time to discover the hops. When we see packets dropped in a traceroute, high latency numbers etc., it does not always indicate a real problem. Most Internet border routers are "big" routers; they will have something called the forwarding plane, which is the part responsible of sending/receiving the packets passing through the router. Then we have the control plane, which is the "router." Even in a 7600 it's only a 1200Mhz RISC processor, and it's the one that is responding to pings and sending TTL expired messages. As with anything, TTL expired has been exploited for a DoS attack on routers so it's usually rate limited; so is ICMP and other stuff that could impact the control plane of the router. The router will answer when it feels like answering these messages. If you ping a router you might see jumps in response time and that is by no mean indication of how it is performing. It could be some indication on the housekeeping of the control plane, but not if it's overloaded. "Routers are usually lazy answering pings" ;P

I hope this first blog from the network team helps explain what we are doing, the problems we're facing and how we are tackling this ever changing thing called the Internet.

phishing email alert!!!

There is currently an EVE mail going around from someone claiming to be from EVE Online Customer Support saying that account security has been compromised and asking players to go to a certain link to log in and change password. This email is not from CCP, and several players have wound up victims of this scam unwittingly.

We urge you to be careful whenever you receive emails of this nature, and to always double-check links. It's much better to be safe than sorry.

Massively webcomic: Grinders - Big Ships Eat Little Ships

This is probably a common gag for EVE players familiar with the Titan capital ships, and Arkhamina from GoonFleet was kind enough to share it for Grinders, along with this adorable little narrative:

"Once upon a time, there was a sad Titan. All of his buddies had gone to Empire space to gank the freighters who were safely moving things around where Concord was there to protect them. Since Titans are not allowed there, he could not go play with his Goon friends, he wandered lonely alone, until he saw a Tempest, all alone. He opened his mouth wide and..... CHOMP."

Have a funny story of your own? Submit your tale complete with a screenshot to lemuel@massively.com. The best will be tenderized into a square patty and grilled on the barbie for our next luau. Or just put in the comic.
